1. You will work on your own for the beginning of this project. First, you will be assigned a role by the teacher, which will determine the topics you will research. Below are the following roles:

  • The Ecologist: This person will focus on the habitat of the Giant Panda.

  • The Conservationist: This person will research what is being done to protect this specie.

  • The Zoologist: This person will focus on specific characteristics about the Giant Panda.

  • The Environmentalist: This person will research what is being done to conserve the resources pandas need for survival.

2. Once you are assigned a specific role, it is time to start researching! Below are links provided to find your background information on the Giant Panda. Using other resources is not forbidden, but stay away from Wikipedia!

3. After you have completed your research, you will meet with your peers in the class that have the same role as you. i.e. the conservationists meet with the conservationists. In your groups, you create a presentation of your compiled data to present to the class. You may use a powerpoint or poster, be sure to include visuals. It is crucial to pay attention while watching presentations, as everyones data is needed to complete your next task.

4. Now that you know a great amount about the Giant Panda, you will get back into your groups to devise your recovery plan. The recovery plan must be written as a proposal, with the audience being World Wildlife Fund. The proposal should be 2-3 pages and should include specific data that has brought you to your solution and support why you think it will work. Your final draft should be turned in to the teacher.

5. Finally, your group will make an advertisement to promote awareness of the endangerment of the Giant Panda. Some ideas include: A commercial (either taped or as a presentation to the class), a website to collect funding, a magazine article, poster, etc. You will present your final product to the entire class, and then the class will vote on which advertisement they believe is the most effective. The winners will receive extra credit points!
